COYOTE LORE

The coyote is cousin to the domestic dog and the wolf and is native to the prairies and desert canyons of the western USA. In recent times, coyotes have extended their range from southern Canada to Costa Rica in Central America, crossing the Mississippi River and making themselves at home in cities, suburbs and rural areas in the eastern US.

Versatile beyond belief, coyotes are curious about human activities and sometimes play with sticks or discarded pop cans, even drawing people or pet dogs into their games.

Coyotes have been shot, poisoned, trapped and otherwise persecuted, yet have still flourished. We should accept their help in controlling rats and mice, respect their tenacity, admire their wildness, and salute their curiosity and playfulness..
